Whenever Mom made mashed potatoes it was your lucky night if you got the beaters from the mixer. There were "girls nights" for beaters or "boys nights." And rarely, and most unfairly was "daddy night." (He got BOTH beaters...how unfair is that....)
I remember asking my mom several hundred times "Who's turn for the beaters tonight?"
Until we all got a little older and not quite as whiny, then it was "whoever is in the kitchen first gets the beaters." You should've heard us come running when the mixer came on. Regardless of the fact that it was two inches of mashed potatoes that was gone in a minute, and we weren't going to get a huge scoop, probably two, at dinner anyway it was a big deal. (all of you with siblings can't understand this concept I'm sure.)
So tonight when I made mashed potatoes for dinner and handed a beater to Sean and he shook his head, I don't quite think he got the sacrifice of love I was offering to him. I insisted, waving it in his face as I proceeded to continue licking with my mouth full of mashed potatoes. He again resisted and I realized I married the most wonderful man in the world. He grilled me steaks AND let me have both the beaters. I think I might be in heaven.
And when we have kids there will only be 3 options for beaters: girls night, boys night, and "Momma night.."
Or maybe to keep them all to myself (to save from fights of course) I will never let my children know what "having beaters" is all about...

I can't believe you.
Would you really take away the advantage of your kids having THE beater? I mean it is THE beater, you know it yourself that it could have been the only good thing about your day, whether it was because Barney was a rerun, or you made a bad grade on a test, THE beater made your day just a little bit brighter. It gave you something to look forward to, taught you to share, and tasted downright delicious.
So no, you will NOT deprive your kids of a childhood memory, and I will make sure this happens. By the way, this blog made my day. It was the "beater" of my day today. Haha.
So COME ON. THINK about it. How would your life be without THE beater. You have to keep the beater tradition alive, and I won't have it any other way.
Your loving, (appalled-that-you-would-even-think-of-a-thing-like-not-having-beater-privileges), sister,
Teal
Potatoes? You missed out on the great things of life: "Cake Batter Beaters". It's a shame you were raised so wrong.....
In my family, Mom got the beaters, but, we would die to "lick the bowl". I'm with Jason. We didn't rush in for the potatoes, but, we were all over that bowl if cake was on the menu! And aren't you feeling scathed by little sister? ha! ~Mindy
I love reading your posts Teisha, you're such a good writer :)
